Physically the player is little bigger and heavier than it&#8217;s successor. In this case: I got a player with mechanical and electrical faults ! These faults somewhat hinder giving a full verdict on the player, so I&#8217;ll keep this short and sweet.<\/p>\n<h2>So What Was Wrong With It ?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1192\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/CLD-2950-video-essentials-s-and-w-pattern.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1192\" class=\"wp-image-1192 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/CLD-2950-video-essentials-s-and-w-pattern-300x222.png\" alt=\"Pioneer CLD-2950 -  from Video Essentials, (NTSC CAV) overall a reasonable. Note &#8211; using the Snell and Wilcox TBS-185&#8217;s comb filter.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first problem was failure to clamp\/spin-up &#8211; this is a very common fault, and resolved by replacing the small rubber belt at the front right of the player.<\/p>\n<p>The second problem was diagonally rolling of the electronically generated image (i.e. blue-screen). Note the image has been scaled\/zoomed for clarity.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In PAL, compared to the CLD-D925, the CLD-2950 is a little bit softer, and is therefore much softer than the LD-V4300D.<\/p>\n<p>NTSC luma noise levels were very good (possibly due to the softer frequency response curve), but NTSC chroma noise levels were &#8216;PAL player bad&#8217;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1198\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-Frequency-Response-incl-CLD-2950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1198\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1198\" src=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-Frequency-Response-incl-CLD-2950-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Pioneer Laserdisc NTSC Frequency Response\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-Frequency-Response-incl-CLD-2950-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-Frequency-Response-incl-CLD-2950.jpg 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NTSC Frequency Response<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Overall it&#8217;s hard to place the PAL players in an absolute ordering, since the faults particular to each player make it hard to recommend any of them.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I noticed during testing was that the LD-V4300D as well as having\u00a0excellent frequency response in PAL, it also has rock solid timebase &#8211; if you look closely at the Jason Bars frequency burst you&#8217;ll see how stable it&#8217;s horizontal timebase is compared to the CLD-D925 and 2950.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusions<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1199\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-color-signal-to-noise-ratio-incl-CLD-2950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1199\" class=\"wp-image-1199 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-color-signal-to-noise-ratio-incl-CLD-2950-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Laserdisc NTSC color signal-to-noise ratio\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-color-signal-to-noise-ratio-incl-CLD-2950-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/notonbluray.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Laserdisc-color-signal-to-noise-ratio-incl-CLD-2950.jpg 586w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laserdisc NTSC color signal-to-noise ratio<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I purchased the CLD-2950 in search of an acceptable PAL player. After reviewing it: I&#8217;m still looking.
